A former high-ranking FBI official, Charles McGonigal, who previously led the agency’s New York counterintelligence division and played a pivotal role in the Trump-Russia collusion probe, has been sentenced to four years in prison. His conviction stems from colluding with Russia, particularly involving bribes from Russian oligarch Oleg V. Deripaska, as well as a separate indictment for concealing $225,000 in payments from a former Albanian intelligence officer.

McGonigal, 55, was apprehended in January and faced two distinct indictments—one in New York and another in Washington. The New York case revolved around accepting nearly $200,000 in bribes from Deripaska to investigate a rival oligarch, while the Washington case focused on the concealed payments from the Albanian source.
There is already 10,000X more evidence of Biden foreign influence-peddling than there ever was of Trump-Russia collusion. But I am sure Rachel Maddow and the rest of the lamestream media will follow this all with the same kind of fervor. That’s SARCASM, for the uninitiated Kyle Becker
Before directly working for Deripaska, McGonigal earned at least $25,000 as an investigator for a law firm. The indictment revealed an initial payment of $51,000, followed by monthly payments of $41,790 from August 2021 to November 2021.

Prosecutors alleged that McGonigal deliberately concealed his association with the Russian oligarch, describing his work to friends as that for a “rich Russian guy.” He emphasized the legality of his actions, referring to Deripaska as “the big guy” and “you know whom” to maintain secrecy about his employer’s identity.

During his tenure as the head of the NY counterintelligence division, McGonigal oversaw investigations into Russian oligarchs, including Deripaska. The recent indictment in Federal District Court in Manhattan charged him with one count of violating U.S. sanctions, one count of money laundering, and two conspiracy counts.

Recently, Judge Jennifer H. Rearden of Federal District Court sentenced McGonigal to a 50-month prison term and imposed a $40,000 fine. She justified the sentence by balancing McGonigal’s more than two decades of law enforcement service with the severity of his crimes, which she deemed “extremely serious” and threatening to national security. While acknowledging that McGonigal may not have intended to undermine sanctions on Deripaska, Judge Rearden asserted that it was the consequence of his actions when he investigated Deripaska’s rival, Vladimir Potanin.

McGonigal’s efforts on behalf of Deripaska, shrouded in the use of shell companies and subcontractors, aimed to gather information about Potanin’s business. Prosecutors argued that the ultimate goal was to trigger sanctions against Potanin, potentially leveling the playing field with Deripaska. However, the plot unraveled when the FBI seized McGonigal’s cellphone and that of another associate, Sergey Shestakov.
