    As geopolitical tensions rise in the Middle East, the Biden administration faces mounting pressure to address the increasing threat posed by Iran and its regional proxies, including the Houthis and Hezbollah. The situation has escalated to the point where global shipping is being diverted from the Red Sea due to a series of drone and rocket attacks. Additionally, American bases in Syria and Iraq have been targeted over 100 times since mid-October, a consequence of Israel’s operations in Gaza.

In a recent statement, the Iranian government issued a warning that the Mediterranean Sea could be “closed” in response to what they perceive as Israeli and U.S. “crimes” in Gaza. Although the feasibility of such a threat is uncertain, it underscores the gravity of the situation.

    Iranian Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi was quoted in state media and Reuters, saying, “They shall soon await the closure of the Mediterranean Sea, (the Strait of) Gibraltar, and other waterways.” He continued, “Yesterday, the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz became a nightmare for them, and today they are trapped… in the Red Sea.”

    In normal circumstances, such statements might be dismissed as delusional threats. However, the impact is already evident, with certain Mediterranean ports, especially those in Israel, experiencing a significant decline in imports. The question remains as to how Iran’s military could realistically achieve the closure of the Mediterranean, given its lack of direct access to the region. Naqdi alluded to the “birth of new powers of resistance and the closure of other waterways,” but the specifics remain unclear.

    The White House, in response, stated on Friday that Iran was “deeply involved” in planning operations against commercial vessels in the Red Sea. Despite Iran’s lack of direct access to the Mediterranean, the U.S. expressed concern about the potential threat posed by Iran’s military actions.

    This latest development appears to be a direct response to the White House’s accusation that Iran was orchestrating attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. U.S. Navy warships have responded to these incidents on multiple occasions. While the U.S. has intercepted drones and missiles from Yemen, there has been no direct retaliation against Houthi positions as of yet.
