Determined to Destroy Musk, Democrats Will Continue Their Assault on Tesla, Even Knowing Many Auto Manufacturers Have Far More Problems with Their EVs Than Tesla
In a recent development, two Democratic senators, Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, have called on Tesla CEO Elon Musk to recall all of the electric vehicle manufacturer’s “high-risk cars” amid concerns about alleged safety flaws. The senators, in a letter sent to Musk on December 27, emphasized worries about steering control and suspension issues in certain Tesla vehicles, issues that had led to recalls in China in 2020.

The call for action comes on the heels of a Reuters report, released last week, which asserted that Tesla was aware of persistent “flaws” and “failures” in some of its vehicles, particularly related to steering control and suspension caused by defective parts. The report, based on internal documents and interviews with former Tesla managers and service technicians, claimed that the company had concealed the causes of these flaws from U.S. regulators and the public. – Continued below the vid clip

Tesla has vehemently denied the allegations made in the Reuters report, asserting that it is “wildly misleading” and “riddled with incomplete and demonstrably incorrect information.” The company criticized the report for suggesting widespread customer dissatisfaction, noting that Tesla’s customer retention is among the best and highest in the industry.

The senators’ letter to Musk expressed their “extreme concern” about the safety flaws and the alleged concealment of information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). They called on Musk to initiate a swift recall of all Tesla components posing a safety risk and urged him to correct the record with the NHTSA to ensure its ability to perform its regulatory duties effectively.
The senators highlighted Tesla’s earlier communication with the NHTSA in 2020, where the company acknowledged the need to recall a front suspension part called the aft link and a rear suspension part called the upper link in China. However, no similar recall has been issued in the United States or other countries, raising concerns about the safety of American drivers.

The lawmakers criticized Tesla for attempting to shift responsibility for the substandard quality of its vehicles onto customers, blaming alleged driver “abuse” or “misuse” for the reported failures. They insisted that Tesla correct the record and commit to providing accurate and truthful statements in the future, emphasizing the impact on the credibility and reputation of the company and, more importantly, the safety of motorists.
As of now, Tesla has not responded to the senators’ letter, but the company defended itself against the Reuters report, asserting its commitment to being “truthful and transparent” with safety regulators globally. Tesla claimed to have paid for most of the 120,000 vehicle repairs under warranty and highlighted its advanced vehicle telemetry system, which identifies emerging issues and allows for swift improvements.

Despite the recent scrutiny, Tesla’s recall history was also discussed, pointing out that, overall, recalls are significantly down year over year. Earlier this month, Tesla recalled just over two million vehicles in the U.S. with its autopilot advanced driver-assistance system to address a software issue. The recall followed a two-year NHTSA investigation into crashes involving the autopilot system.
To Sum It All Up: the senators’ letter underscores growing congressional concern over Tesla’s handling of safety issues, demanding accountability and transparency to ensure the well-being of American drivers. Tesla’s response to these allegations and its willingness to address safety concerns will likely have significant implications for its standing in the automotive industry.
