“If I were to sign House Bill 68, or if House Bill 68 were to become law, Ohio would be saying that the state, that the government, knows better what is medically best for a child than the two people who love that child the most—the parents,” said Governor DeWine.
The governor shared that he had conversations with transgender individuals who expressed that they might have contemplated suicide if they hadn’t undergone gender-altering treatments. For him, this decision was fundamentally about protecting life, drawing a parallel with his stance on the abortion issue.

He announced plans to direct state agencies to develop rules prohibiting gender-altering surgeries for individuals under 18 and to draft regulations requiring the reporting of data on patients receiving gender-altering care every six months.
