    House Republicans Face Shaky Majority and Funding Deadlines Amid Leadership Resignations

    This resignation coincides with Congress’s two government funding deadlines, set by a continuing resolution (CR) passed late last year. According to this resolution, an agreement must be reached by January 19 for certain agencies and by February 2 for others.

    The impending departure of Johnson will leave the Republicans with a slim two-seat margin, a fragile situation that won’t endure for long. In November, Representative Brian Higgins, a Democrat from New York, announced his intention to leave Congress in February. Despite attempts to obtain an exact resignation date from Higgins’ office, none has been offered as of yet.

    If Higgins remains in office beyond the first two days of February, House Republicans will find themselves with limited room for maneuvering in bipartisan negotiations to avert a government shutdown. The resignation of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, effective December 31, had already diminished the GOP’s majority to a mere three seats just days before Johnson’s announcement.

    While some House Republicans downplayed the significance of these developments in late December, others expressed greater concern. Blake Moore, the GOP Conference Vice Chair from Utah, commented that their situation, with both Johnson and McCarthy leaving, wouldn’t be much different from the four-seat majority they had been working with for most of 2023.

    Operating with a slim majority, whether four seats or two, presents challenges, according to Moore, emphasizing the need for judicious decision-making. In contrast, Representative Mike Garcia from California expressed a more cautious outlook, stating, “Between God, gravity, indictments, and retirements, we’re one day away from losing the majority, depending on what happens.”

    The upcoming government funding deal will necessitate bipartisan cooperation, with House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, collaborating with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, to establish a top-line figure. Johnson may not be the Speaker for long if he does not hold the line against the Democrat plan to bankrupt the nation. Take a look at the Debt Clock – and you will notice this debt must be serviced. This is all part of the Democrat plan to topple America, and the Republicans are thus far doing nothing to stop it.

    Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Schumer expressed hope for a timely bipartisan deal to prevent a shutdown. “We’re getting quite close,” said the New York Democrat. “I’m hopeful that we can get a budget agreement soon, and I’m hopeful that we could avoid a shutdown, given the progress we’ve made. That is certainly not out of the question, as some people have said it would be.”  Sure, Chucky.  We believe you.
