One of the key safety concerns highlighted in the announcement is related to the automatic steering function. When engaged, there is a potential for drivers to misuse the combined driving function, increasing the risk of accidents. This announcement follows a similar recall in May, where Tesla recalled approximately 1,104,000 vehicles in China to address widespread safety risks identified by regulators, which increased the likelihood of drivers mistakenly accelerating and risking collisions. The earlier recall affected various models, including the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model 6.

It is noteworthy that Tesla has the capability to remotely upgrade the affected vehicles to resolve the identified issues, providing an efficient solution to the safety concerns. However, the China State Administration for Market Regulation has emphasized the importance of this recall to ensure the overall safety of the Tesla vehicles on Chinese roads.

This safety-related development follows Tesla’s recall of over 2 million U.S. vehicles in early December. Owners received over-the-air software updates due to a recall related to the vehicles’ autopilot feature. Later that month, Tesla recalled 120,000 vehicles in the U.S. over concerns of doors unlocking during a crash.
Despite these recalls, Tesla ended the year 2023 on a positive note by surpassing estimates for fourth-quarter deliveries. According to Tesla’s production and deliveries report for 2023, the company delivered a record-breaking 484,507 vehicles between October and December, achieving its 2023 target of 1.8 million vehicles. The fourth-quarter deliveries were approximately 11% higher than the third quarter, where production was impacted by upgrades to assembly lines for the updated Model 3 mass-market sedan.

- Tesla still the lowest number of recalls amongst all major automakers. Also their recalls are software updates handled remotely over the air and do involve having to physically service the vehicles. Cost and time to the #Tesla consumer is zero and minimal cost to Tesla. Legacy automakers have way more recalls and don’t have the ability to handle any of them using OTA fixes. This inconveniences their customers and costs them a significant amount to have to physically service their vehicles. Odd how the media goes out of its way to amplify a non impactful Tesla recall but ignores recall notices of other automakers even though the cost and impact to the consumer and automaker is significantly higher. One might think there is a coordinated targeted effort by disrupted industries to cause harm to Tesla. – Mark Prati
