If one of our two National Command Authorities is in a hospital bed, Americans need to know immediately. He works for us. Now Biden’s people are claiming that they didn’t know for four days either. They’re saying he went in for an elective procedure on January 1, which I don’t believe because why would surgeons perform a surgery on New Years Day?

    Then allegedly he had complications and just didn’t think to say a word to anyone for three days. It’s not just unprofessional, it’s a flagrant violation of 5 U.S.C. 3349 which clearly states: “The head of each Executive agency (including the Executive Office of the President, and other than the Government Accountability Office) shall submit to the Comptroller General of the United States and to each House of Congress – The head of each Executive agency (including the Executive Office of the President, and other than the Government Accountability Office) shall submit to the Comptroller General of the United States and to each House of Congress notification of a vacancy in an office and the date such vacancy occurred immediately upon the occurrence of the vacancy.” Three days later is NOT immediately.     Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder confirmed on January 5 that Austin had been admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on the evening of January 1 due to complications following an elective medical procedure. Ryder assured that Austin was expected to resume his duties on January 5 and was recovering well. The deputy secretary of defense, Kathleen Hicks, was prepared to act in Austin’s absence if needed.

    In standard practice, there is a 24-hour norm for reporting incapacitation of senior administration and military officials to the president and National Security Council. However, the timeline can vary based on the severity of the medical condition and the officials’ ability to make decisions, according to Brad Carson, a former under secretary and chief management officer of the Army, as reported by Politico.

    President Joe Biden, leaving evening mass in Delaware on Saturday night, declined to comment on Austin’s hospitalization and recovery when questioned by a reporter. Austin expressed gratitude to the medical staff at Walter Reed and thanked colleagues and friends for their support, mentioning his anticipation of returning to the Pentagon soon.

    Despite the acknowledgment of a delay in notifying the White House, Austin and his spokesperson, Ryder, did not disclose specific details about the medical procedure. Ryder explained to NBC News that the situation had been evolving, considering various factors, and emphasized Austin’s personal privacy.

    The Pentagon Press Association criticized the delay in reporting, calling it an “outrage” in a letter to the heads of the Pentagon’s press office dated January 5. The association argued that the public has the right to know when cabinet members are hospitalized or duties are delegated due to medical procedures, even at the president’s level. They asserted that Secretary Austin, as the top defense leader, had no claim to privacy in this situation.
