    Senator Bob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, vehemently criticized the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Tuesday, denouncing what he characterized as political “persecution.” The Senator is facing serious criminal charges related to allegations of acting as a foreign agent while serving as the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

    In a statement reported by the New York Post, Menendez, who previously suggested that former President Donald Trump might have been “compromised” by the Russian government, has shifted his focus to accusing the DOJ of intentionally undermining his political career.     Menendez’s downfall began in September 2023 when federal prosecutors alleged that he and his wife, Nadine Menendez, accepted bribes in exchange for political favors. A raid on Menendez’s residence reportedly uncovered cash, gold bars, and a luxurious Mercedes Benz—all of which prosecutors claimed were obtained through a corruption scheme. Menendez seems to think that gold bars are not bribery.

    A month later, Menendez faced charges of acting as an agent of the Egyptian government, accused of advocating for favorable policies for the North African country. The most recent indictment on January 2 accused him of aiding real estate developer Fred Daibes in dealings with a member of the Qatari royal family to secure a deal, according to the NY Post.

    He continued, criticizing media coverage, “Almost everyone, including my friends in the press who have reported on it, haven’t read the indictment. They’ve only taken the government’s sensational narrative of what those accusations are as truth.”
