    In a significant diplomatic meeting at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to standing alongside the people of Taiwan in the face of escalating Chinese aggression. The meeting took place between Speaker Johnson and Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to the United States, Envoy Alexander Yui, signaling a robust alliance between the two nations.

Emphasizing the importance of aiding in the defense of Taiwan, he expressed the U.S.’s determination to deter any military provocations by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). “The U.S. stands with our friends,” he affirmed, underscoring the enduring partnership between the United States and Taiwan.

    Envoy Alexander Yui echoed these sentiments, expressing his eagerness to “further strengthen our rock-solid friendship.” Speaker Johnson reciprocated the sentiment, acknowledging the significance of the relationship and expressing the shared commitment to strengthening it.

    This diplomatic exchange comes at a critical time, with the CCP intensifying its harassment of Taiwan in the lead-up to the island’s upcoming presidential vote. Recent provocations include the launch of balloons and a rocket carrying a satellite into Taiwan’s airspace. Taiwan’s foreign minister has characterized these incidents as part of a larger pattern of aggression aimed at influencing voters ahead of the election.

    Notably, this meeting mirrors a similar event in August 2022 when former Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan. The CCP responded by launching missiles around Taiwan and severing all military communications with the United States. The actions of the CCP underline the sensitivity and gravity surrounding international interactions involving Taiwan.

    The Chinese Communist Party asserts that Taiwan is a renegade province that must be reunified with the mainland, employing any means necessary. Despite these claims, the CCP has never exercised control over any part of the island. Taiwan, on the other hand, operates as a self-governed democracy with a highly successful market economy. While the United States does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan out of respect for China’s position, the two nations share robust informal ties, particularly in economic and military spheres.  We in fact stabbed Taiwan in the back back when China pressed for Taiwan’s expulsion from the UN.

    The repercussions of Speaker Johnson’s meeting with Envoy Yui remain uncertain, raising questions about Beijing’s response to this diplomatic exchange. White House National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby acknowledged the intriguing nature of China’s intentions and goals. Nevertheless, he reiterated the Biden administration’s unwavering commitment to supporting free and fair elections in Taiwan.

    “We want to see a free and fair and transparent election, and we’re willing to stand by and work with whoever the people of Taiwan elect to their government,” affirmed Kirby. The Biden administration continues to emphasize the importance of democratic processes and maintaining stability in the region. The evolving dynamics between the United States, Taiwan, and China underscore the complex geopolitical landscape and the delicate balance required in navigating these relationships. All of this sounds good, but the reality of the situation is in Taiwan they have been free from Communist China since the People’s Republic was born. Taiwan escaped the mass murder, escaped the suppression of the mainland by being a free state. They have outperformed China and their tech industry is the envy of the world. China wants them, and as the 800 pound gorilla, China expects to get what it wants.
