In a somber turn of events, the father of American journalist Gonzalo Lira has announced the untimely death of his son, aged 55, while in Ukrainian custody. Lira, who was detained for criticizing the governments of Zelensky and Biden, had become a contentious figure in the eyes of the Biden administration. Gonzalo Lira was an American citizen, but the Biden administration clearly supported his imprisonment and torture.     Lira’s arrest took place in May by Ukrainian authorities, who cited his public justification of the Russian invasion as the primary reason. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) released a statement outlining the charges against him. Notably, the statement identified Lira as a citizen of a Latin American country, omitting his California-born U.S. citizenship

The motive behind this cruel act was to question his ability to read with just one eye. Lira further revealed that he decided to make a desperate escape towards the Hungarian border on a motorcycle.

    Journalist Alex Rubernstein shared Lira’s account of suffering from double pneumonia in both lungs, a condition reportedly ignored by the Ukrainian prison authorities. In a letter, Lira described the severity of his health issues, including pneumothorax and extreme edema. The prison acknowledged his pneumonia only during a hearing on December 22, leaving Lira in a critical state. Desperate for relief, he mentioned undergoing a procedure to alleviate the pressure caused by edema in his lungs, which led to extreme shortness of breath.

    In response to the reported death of his son, Lira’s father expressed profound grief and anger. He vehemently criticized the circumstances surrounding his son’s demise, stating, “I cannot accept the way my son has died. He was tortured, extorted, incommunicado for 8 months and 11 days, and the US Embassy did nothing to help my son.” Blaming Ukrainian President Zelensky and accusing U.S. President Joe Biden of negligence, he declared them jointly responsible for the tragedy.
