    House Judiciary Committee Demands Ghostwriter’s Files Amidst Controversy Over President Biden’s Memoir Collaboration

    The House Judiciary Committee has formally requested the ghostwriter of President Joe Biden’s memoirs, Mark Zwonitzer, to surrender any remaining audio recordings and transcripts of his conversations with the President. Committee Chairman Jim Jordan sent an email to Mr. Zwonitzer, urging him to provide materials related to the collaboration on books like “Promise Me, Dad” and “Promises to Keep.”

He kept classified notes in notebooks that also contained notes about Beau that he shared with his ghostwriter–who deleted recordings after Hur was appointed. Hur also reported that sympathy cards and other mementos of Beau were mixed in with classified records. For example: “In the same box in the garage where FBI agents found the classified Afghanistan documents, agents also found other documents of great personal importance to Mr. Biden, including photos of his son Beau and documents Mr. Biden filed, accessed, and used in early 2017, during the same time he told Zwonitzer found the classified documents about Afghanistan in his Virginia home. The evidence suggests that Mr. Eiden maintained these files himself.”

    This request follows the release of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s 388-page report investigating President Biden’s alleged mishandling of classified documents. The report highlights the presence of notebooks containing handwritten entries on national security and foreign policy, used by Zwonitzer in crafting the memoirs. President Biden faced criticism for his supposed retention and disclosure of classified information, with assertions of poor memory and mental faculties.

    President Biden, in response to the report, refuted claims about willful retention of documents and sharing classified information with his ghostwriter.     However, Committee Chairman Jim Jordan raised doubts about the accuracy of the President’s denial, referencing the special counsel’s findings. The report indicated that during interviews with Zwonitzer, President Biden often read passages verbatim from his notebooks, including those dealing with classified information. The notebooks were maintained during his tenure as vice president.

    The special counsel, Robert Hur, pointed out that although Biden risked sharing classified information by reading unfiltered notes, there was no evidence that he knew the passages were classified when shared with the ghostwriter.

    Jordan’s letter to Zwonitzer questioned the seeming contradiction between the President’s denial and material facts in the special counsel’s report. The Committee requested communication records, contracts, payment information, audio recordings, and transcripts related to Zwonitzer’s ghostwriting work on Biden’s memoirs. Additionally, they sought materials connected to the investigation conducted by Mr. Hur.

    The Committee urged Zwonitzer to participate in a transcribed interview about the matter. A deadline of Feb. 23 was set for the submission of requested documents and scheduling the interview. However, the extent to which Zwonitzer can comply with this demand remains uncertain.

    The special counsel noted that Zwonitzer had deleted audio recordings from his computer upon learning of the investigation, prompting consideration of obstruction of justice charges. Yet, due to plausible and innocent reasons offered by the ghostwriter, and his cooperation with investigators, a conviction would be unlikely.

    House Republicans on the Judiciary, alongside two other influential panels, have also requested transcripts and tapes of President Biden’s interview with Mr. Hur’s office. In a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, they sought records for “investigatory purposes” as part of ongoing oversight related to the Department’s handling of the investigation and prosecution of President Biden’s potential opponent, Donald J. Trump, in the November 2024 presidential election.
