Wong, a Hong Kong native, arrived in the United States in 2019 for graduate studies and was sworn in during a ceremony at San Francisco City Hall on Wednesday.

Wong’s appointment received unanimous support from the board, and she expressed her gratitude on LinkedIn, emphasizing the importance of representation for immigrants and marginalized communities in shaping the city’s future.

    This groundbreaking appointment became possible through a 2020 vote in which San Francisco voters approved a proposal to eliminate the requirement for candidates seeking office to hold U.S. citizenship. This decision opened the door for non-citizens like Wong to contribute to city boards, commissions, and advisory bodies.

The organization successfully lobbied for a change in the law, allowing non-citizens to vote in school board elections if their child attends a school in the district. Wong, who has been with the group since 2022, plans to continue this work while serving on the Elections Commission.

    Expressing gratitude for the change in the law, Wong credited Sarah Souza, the City of San Francisco’s Immigrant Rights Commissioner, for her successful 2020 campaign to allow non-citizens to serve on local commissions and advisory boards. Souza, who arrived in the United States as an undocumented immigrant child, became the first of her kind in California appointed to the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee.

    In her post, Wong acknowledged Souza’s advocacy and perseverance, emphasizing the transformative impact of such policy changes. She encouraged fellow immigrants in San Francisco, stating, “If I can do it, you can too,” and expressed hope that her appointment serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that change is possible, and immigrant voices matter in policymaking.

    Vincent Pan, co-executive director of Chinese for Affirmative Action, echoed these sentiments, expressing a desire for a future where the involvement of immigrants and noncitizens in city governance becomes commonplace. Wong’s appointment, he emphasized, is a step towards a day when such diversity and inclusion are no longer considered newsworthy in a city with a large percentage of immigrant communities. As if this is logical in any way to the citizens of this nation.
