Former President Donald Trump has finally broken his silence on the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, addressing the issue on his Truth Social platform. Trump used the occasion to criticize what he called ‘grossly unfair’ court decisions in the United States.

Navalny’s death occurred in an Arctic Circle penal colony, where he had been transferred and placed in solitary confinement after returning to Russia following a nerve agent poisoning attempt. In his statement on Truth Social, Trump expressed awareness of the events surrounding Navalny’s death, attributing it to a perceived decline in the United States. He pointed fingers at what he described as “CROOKED, Radical Left Politicians, Prosecutors, and Judges” leading the country towards destruction. Trump raised concerns about issues such as open borders, rigged elections, and what he deemed as grossly unfair courtroom decisions, stating, “WE ARE A NATION IN DECLINE, A FAILING NATION! Although Trump did not explicitly connect his post to his ongoing legal situation, it notably followed his criticism of a judge who ordered him to pay $355 million after his New York witch hunt fraud trial.
Trump’s statement, however, did not specifically condemn Navalny’s death or the conditions of his imprisonment. Contrastingly, President Joe Biden had previously held Russian President Vladimir Putin “responsible” for Navalny’s demise. International leaders also demanded accountability from Putin, with some labeling Navalny’s death as a brutal murder.
Critics seized on Trump’s delayed response, especially given his previous statements about fostering a positive relationship with Russia and Putin. At a recent rally, Trump criticized NATO allies for failing to meet defense spending thresholds and suggested he would encourage Russia to act as it pleased if nations did not pay their bills.
The Russian authorities have told Navalny’s family that they will have to keep his body for a prolonged period of time to investigate his death.

Nikki Haley, Trump’s remaining supposed GOP primary rival, criticized him for his silence on Navalny’s death, expressing concern about his apparent reluctance to confront Putin. She questioned whether Trump sided with Putin or simply didn’t consider Navalny’s death a significant issue. Playing propaganda games and doing what the Deep State wants is what Haley seems to be all about. She is in this until the end in order to do as much damage as possible to Trump for the Democrats.
