    Border Vets Take Action: Placing Concertina Wire to Address Surging Migrant Flow in San Diego

    In the rugged mountains east of San Diego, a dedicated group of veterans known as the “Border Vets” recently took matters into their own hands to address the surging flow of migrants from Mexico into the United States. Their mission involved placing concertina wire in small gaps in the border wall, aiming to impede the movement of migrants attempting to enter the country illegally. Among the participants was Kate Monroe, a retired Marine Corps veteran and current congressional candidate for California’s 49th District, challenging Democrat Mike Levin.

    Expressing her commitment to the cause, Monroe emphasized the significance of serving the country once again, stating, “I put my life on the line to serve our country once when I signed up to join the Marines, and I’m amped to serve our country again in this way. However, it is disappointing that I had to do it, and that nobody else had the guts to do it.”

    The group was captured in a NewsNation report, stationed at the base of the border wall east of San Diego, a region where migrants, facilitated by cartel smugglers, are brought to exploit gaps in the barrier. Although uncertain about the longevity of their temporary fix, the Border Vets remain undeterred. Monroe asserted to a NewsNation reporter, “That’s not going to stop us or deter us from coming here. If we can stop them for one day, one hour, one week, we’ve stopped more people from coming into our country.”

    While Mexico has implemented measures to decrease migrant flows using freight trains to reach the Texas border, the impact has been unequal across various border sectors. The Border Patrol’s San Diego Sector, in particular, remains unaffected by these measures. According to an insider within Customs and Border Protection, migrant crossings in the San Diego Sector, covering areas like Jacumba and Boulevard to the East, have witnessed a significant spike compared to the same period last year. Breitbart Texas reported that apprehensions from October to the third week of February have surged by 76%.

    In the fiscal year 2024, over 140,000 migrants have entered the United States near San Diego, a stark contrast to slightly over 80,000 in the corresponding timeframe in fiscal year 2023. The escalating flow is straining the resources of Customs and Border Protection, making the task of apprehending and transporting migrants to processing facilities increasingly challenging. The source revealed, “Some are camping out near the border fence as they wait to be taken into custody, with migrants spread throughout the sector continuing to cross; the logistics are just too much for us right now.”

    Migrant groups traversing the area where the Border Vets placed wire to close existing gaps are diverse, including individuals from China, Turkey, various African nations, and numerous other countries outside the hemisphere.

    Despite civilians being prohibited from tampering with the border wall, the Border Vets’ activities may not raise concerns within the agency, according to the source. In fact, it is suggested that the group’s efforts could be welcomed by rank-and-file Border Patrol agents who are grappling with the overwhelming volume of migrant traffic in the region. The initiative taken by these veterans, though unconventional, underscores the challenges faced by authorities on the ground and the need for innovative solutions to address the complex issue of border security.
