    Prosecutors involved in the New York hush-money criminal case against former President Donald Trump have requested a gag order from the court, urging the judge to impose restrictions on Trump’s public statements leading up to the trial scheduled for next month.

    In court papers filed on Monday, prosecutors argued that self-regulation is not a viable option for Trump, citing his extensive history of using social media, campaign speeches, and public statements to attack individuals involved in legal proceedings against him, including judges, jurors, lawyers, and witnesses.

    The prosecutors expressed concern that without restrictions, Trump’s rhetoric could pose a significant and imminent threat to the trial by distracting personnel, diverting government resources, and causing delays in the administration of justice. They highlighted Trump’s unique and longstanding history of making statements that could interfere with legal proceedings.

    In response to the gag order request, Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, criticized it as a manifestation of a two-tiered system of justice against the former president. He argued that granting such an order would infringe on Trump’s First Amendment rights and hinder his ability to defend himself, characterizing it as election interference.

    The proposed gag order, as outlined by the prosecutors, would specifically prevent Trump from making or directing others to make public statements about potential witnesses and jurors. It would also bar statements meant to interfere with or harass the court’s staff, prosecution team, or their families. The prosecutors emphasized the need for a narrowly tailored order to address these concerns.

    Notably, the gag order would not extend to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who faces criticism for his perceived far-left, soft-on-crime policies. The prosecutors clarified that they seek a focused order to minimize obstacles to jury selection and protect the safety of jurors.

    This request comes in the context of the Manhattan case, which revolves around allegations that Trump falsified internal records to conceal payments made to his former lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen. The payments were related to hush-money arrangements with porn actor Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign.

    The defense, led by Trump’s lawyer Susan Necheles, is expected to respond to the gag order request in court papers later this week. Trump’s legal team has consistently criticized the case as politically motivated, with claims that it is orchestrated by partisan Democrats aiming to hinder his potential return to the White House.

    The judge, Juan Manuel Merchan, known for his leftist stance, has not yet ruled on the gag order request. Jury selection for the trial is set to commence on March 25, marking the first of Trump’s four criminal cases to go to trial, barring any last-minute delays.
