If you think TikTok should be allowed in the US because of “free speech,” you are engaged in what I call “word-thinking” instead of the real kind of thinking. Word-thinking is when you try to snap-to-grid to an existing definition (such as “free speech”) instead of thinking about a question more usefully. A more useful way to think about TikTok is to realize it is about free speech, yes, but it is also a weapon. If your analysis ends at saying TikTok is only one or the other — free speech or a weapon — you have not considered the whole. If you see TikTok as both a free speech issue and also a tool China can (and probably does) use to decay the fabric of American society, the decision on how to act becomes trivially easy. Word-thinking: Keep TikTok because it is “free speech” Useful thinking: Ban TikTok because it is a dangerous brainwashing tool and an existential threat to America that also has a free speech element. We don’t tolerate Nazi protests and speech in America because of free speech. That’s just the fairy tale we tell ourselves to feel good. We allow it because it is too small to be a threat. TikTok is NOT too small to be a threat. It is becoming the operating system of young people’s brains. And China controls the user interface. – Scott Adams
