Protection dumped water contaminated by local coal mines into creeks that run right next to residents’ private water wells. One resident whose well was independently tested provided the results to status quo. The results showed toxic levels of arsenic, iron, and lead. Nonetheless, DEP tells residents the water is fine based on their testing. Within the last year, cancer rates and other illnesses have been increasing in Wyoming County. West Virginia senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito, as well as West Virginia governor Jim Justice, have ignored residents’ calls for help. I am angry. I’ve been covering Flint for 8 years. I’m sick of people being sickened by the government and corporations and then getting away with it over and over and over.
