In “Civil War,” a supposedly Woke movie now playing in theaters, Kirsten Dunst portrays a seasoned photojournalist named Lee. The film ends dramatically with rebel forces storming the White House to overthrow a tyrannical president, played by Nick Offerman. Lee, alongside rookie photographer Jessie (Cailee Spaeny) and their colleague Joel (Wagner Moura), is there to document the raid. The filming was intense, taking place over two weeks on a noisy, chaotic soundstage in Atlanta. “The loudness was that intense when we were filming,” Dunst shares. “It’s exhausting on your body.”

As the situation inside the White House escalates, Lee saves Jessie from being shot by a gunman, sacrificing herself in the process. Jessie, in a sobering moment, captures Lee’s lifeless body on camera, highlighting the harsh realities of their job. “It’s heartbreaking but also feels inevitable,” Spaeny comments, noting the complexity of documenting such critical moments.

The film follows Jessie’s journey as she becomes increasingly desensitized to violence, a transformation captured in real time, as the movie was shot in chronological order. The climax sees Jessie and Joel reaching the Oval Office, where they find the president cornered. In a desperate moment, the president pleads for his life, but is ultimately shot as the film ends, leaving audiences with a stark and disturbing view of power and its violent overthrow.
