The Israeli military has reported establishing “operational control” over the entire Philadelphi Corridor, a 14-kilometer (8.7-mile) stretch along the border between Gaza and Egypt. This control extends across the corridor, with Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) troops positioned in most areas. However, a section near the coast is not occupied by ground forces; instead, control is maintained through surveillance and firepower.

The corridor, running adjacent to Rafah, has revealed approximately 20 tunnels crossing into Egypt. These tunnels are reportedly used by Hamas to smuggle weapons into Gaza. With the IDF’s current control over the area, it is believed that Hamas can no longer smuggle weapons from Egypt.
Some of these tunnels were previously known to the IDF, while others have been discovered recently. Efforts to demolish these tunnels are underway, and Israel is actively sharing updates with Egypt regarding these developments.

In addition to tunnels, the IDF has identified 82 tunnel shafts within the corridor. Additionally, several rocket launchers have been found along the corridor, positioned very close to the border with Egypt. The placement of these launchers by Hamas appears strategic, aimed at deterring Israeli strikes by leveraging the proximity to the Egyptian border, presumably to avoid potential overshoots into Egyptian territory.
