Amazing this is happening right here in America. These animals are highly intelligent and brutal, a lethal combination
An alarming surge in wild hog populations across America has become a pressing concern, surpassing the threat posed by sharks in terms of human fatalities. These wild hogs, initially introduced by Spanish settlers in the 1500s to Florida, have proliferated to at least 35 states, causing widespread damage to crops, gardens, and occasionally posing physical threats to humans.
Reports of attacks by wild hogs, though infrequent, have led to a grim comparison with shark attacks. Between 2014 and 2023, wild pig attacks resulted in an average of 19.7 fatalities per year, far exceeding the 5.8 average of fatal shark attacks worldwide during the same period. In 2024 alone, seven deaths globally were attributed to wild pig incidents, with a cumulative total of 172 deaths from 2000 to 2019.
Dr. John Mayer from the Savannah River National Laboratory emphasized the underestimated danger posed by wild hogs, citing their potential for aggressive behavior and the severe injuries inflicted by their “stab-and-slash” attacks. Despite other animals like tigers, elephants, and crocodiles causing more human fatalities, wild hogs present a significant threat, especially as human-wildlife encounters increase due to habitat development.
I’ve been warning about the seriousness of this issue for awhile. Ever since the Fintech bros moved down here with the pandemic, we’ve had an invasion of their hog wives in Alo gear https://t.co/SM8PzyHzH6

The expansion of human settlements into areas once dominated by wild hogs has led to more frequent confrontations. In Florida, where wild pigs now inhabit all 67 counties, clashes between humans and hogs have become common, prompting concerns about public safety.
Apart from the direct physical threat to humans, wild hogs wreak havoc on agriculture, resulting in billions of dollars in losses annually. They not only damage crops and farmland but also pose a significant risk to the US pork industry, with potential repercussions like the African Swine Fever outbreak that devastated pig populations in China.
Efforts to control wild hog populations involve citizen hunters, often resorting to extreme measures like shooting pigs from helicopters or using drones for hunting. However, such methods have drawn criticism and concerns about ecological imbalances and ethical considerations.
While some advocate for more humane and strategic approaches to manage wild hog populations, the economic and ecological damages caused by these animals necessitate urgent action. Lethal removal remains the primary solution, given the lack of effective alternatives.
“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new… pic.twitter.com/8B4jW4pFpK

The proliferation of wild hogs has also led to an unexpected culinary trend, with wild boar dishes becoming more prevalent in restaurants, particularly in Florida. Despite the growing demand for wild boar meat, experts caution that culinary preferences alone cannot address the underlying crisis posed by unchecked wild hog populations.
Key Points:
i. Wild hog populations in America have surged, causing widespread damage to crops, gardens, and occasional threats to humans, surpassing the threat posed by sharks in terms of fatalities.
ii. Between 2014 and 2023, wild pig attacks resulted in an average of 19.7 fatalities per year globally, highlighting the severity of the issue.
iii. The expansion of human settlements into wild hog habitats has increased the frequency of human-wildlife encounters, leading to concerns about public safety.
iv. Efforts to control wild hog populations involve extreme measures like shooting from helicopters or using drones for hunting, but these methods have raised ethical and ecological concerns.
v. While wild boar meat has become a culinary trend, experts emphasize the need for urgent and coordinated action to address the economic, ecological, and safety challenges posed by unchecked wild hog populations.
