Hungary has decided not to obstruct NATO’s military assistance to Ukraine, although it will not actively participate in these efforts, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed. This announcement came after discussions with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Budapest. Despite Hungary’s reluctance to be involved directly, Orban assured that Hungary would not hinder the progress of NATO’s plans and would continue to fulfill its obligations within the alliance.

Orban, known for his close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, has consistently been a roadblock in the European Union’s attempts to support Ukraine with military aid and financial backing. According to Stoltenberg, Hungary will neither contribute personnel nor financial resources towards NATO’s initiatives in Ukraine.
The context for these developments includes NATO’s strategic planning to ensure sustained support for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict. Stoltenberg recently revealed plans for establishing a substantial fund aimed at facilitating long-term arms supplies to Kyiv, totaling 100 billion euros ($108 billion). This initiative, however, faced immediate resistance from Hungary. All NATO decisions require unanimous consent from its members, and Hungary’s stance has previously complicated alliance consensus.

Amidst these discussions, broader Western efforts to bolster support for Ukraine continue. The United States is organizing a summit in Washington, D.C., where it anticipates NATO members will outline a strategy for enduring assistance and military training for the Ukrainian forces. During a conference in Riga, Latvia, alongside the presidents of Latvia and Poland, Stoltenberg highlighted the significance of a sustained financial commitment to Ukraine, urging allies to maintain annual contributions of approximately 40 billion euros ($43 billion).

Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of this support in sending a firm message to President Putin that NATO’s commitment is unwavering and long-term, aimed at discouraging any belief that the alliance’s resolve might weaken over time. This stance underscores the ongoing geopolitical tensions and the complex dynamics of international relationships influenced by the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
