Under the new initiative, certain immigrants who are married to U.S. citizens can now apply for permanent residency, and eventually citizenship, without the requirement to leave the country. To be eligible for Biden’s new immigration pathway, immigrants must have lived in the U.S. for at least 10 years and have been married to their U.S. citizen spouse as of the announcement date. Approved applicants will receive a temporary work permit and protection from deportation while they pursue their green card.
This policy was revealed at an event celebrating the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The initiative is also expected to benefit about 50,000 children of noncitizen parents who are married to U.S. citizens.
