The say social media is all smoke and mirrors. Everyone puts on their fake persona, and sometimes there are dark undertones with the quest for success.
The recent documentary “TikTok Star Murders,” set to premiere on Peacock, delves into the harrowing and tragic tale of Ali Abulaban and his wife Ana, whose outward portrayal of a joyous life on social media was far from the truth. The film sheds light on a modern tragedy fueled by the quest for fame and the illusions created by social media platforms.
Ali Abulaban, raised in a conservative Muslim family, joined the Air Force and later met Ana in Okinawa, Japan. Their relationship, though filled with initial promise, faced setbacks early on due to Ali’s aggressive behavior which led to his military discharge. The couple eventually settled in Virginia, and Ana moved from the Philippines to join Ali after discovering she was pregnant. Their life seemed to be on an upward trajectory as Ali pursued his passion for acting through social media, particularly TikTok, where he gained significant following by impersonating famous characters and creating comedy sketches.

Despite his online success, Ali’s portrayal of Tony Montana from Scarface hinted at a deeper affinity for violent characters, suggesting troubling undercurrents in his personality. His real-life behavior started mirroring his online persona’s aggression, particularly towards Ana, casting a shadow over their marriage. Ana, often seen assisting Ali in his videos, began to feel stifled by his controlling and jealous nature.
The couple’s move to San Diego was supposed to be a fresh start closer to Ana’s friends and a step towards Ali’s Hollywood dreams. However, it only escalated the tensions between them. Ali’s jealousy and cocaine addiction worsened, culminating in frequent, documented outbursts against Ana. His fixation on his wife’s fidelity, particularly suspicions about a friend named Ray, grew obsessive. Ana’s attempts to maintain a semblance of normalcy were futile against Ali’s escalating paranoia and abuse.

The situation reached a tragic climax when Ali, driven by rage after secretly listening to Ana’s conversation with Ray through a hidden device, confronted and murdered both Ana and Ray. His actions were a stark manifestation of his deteriorating mental state, heavily influenced by his intense involvement with social media which he blamed for his aggressive tendencies.
