Costner shared that despite the pain, he remains focused on moving forward, especially for the sake of the three children he shares with Baumgartner. He emphasized the importance of showing strength for his children, stating, “I have no choice. I can’t wither away like a flower because my kids are staring at me. I have to go forward.”
The divorce proceedings began when Baumgartner filed for divorce on May 1, 2023, citing irreconcilable differences. A settlement was eventually reached by September, as required by California law which mandates a six-month period from filing to finalization.

During the process, Costner reflected on the nature of divorce after a long partnership: “You know, when you have a life that long with somebody, there is no winner… and This vast, bizarre thing we call life and how swiftly it falls apart.”
The financial aspects of the divorce were notably contentious, particularly regarding child support. Baumgartner initially sought $248,000 per month but the court temporarily set it at $129,755 in July, later adjusting it to $63,209. The final judgment required Costner to pay specific amounts for each of their children: $12,642 for Cayden, 17; $18,962 for Hayes, 15; and $31,605 for Grace, 14. Additionally, Costner is responsible for the children’s healthcare, private school tuition, extracurricular activities, and car expenses for the eldest son.
Despite the initial bitterness of their split, Costner affirmed Baumgartner’s role as a devoted mother and expressed confidence in their ability to co-parent effectively: “She’s an incredible mom. We will figure it out, and we’ll share. We’ve just got to kind of convalesce right now.” The couple is doing what they need to do for the sake of the children. I’ve been there myself. Life goes on and I wish them both the best.
