This remarkable visualization, the most detailed to date, utilizes data collected from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and the more advanced James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

The animation provides a unique view of these massive columns of cosmic dust and gas, which are renowned for being active star-forming regions. With the aid of the JWST’s capabilities in the infrared spectrum, the animation allows viewers to peer inside these colossal structures and witness the formation of new stars, some of which are obscured from view in the visible spectrum.

The creation of this animation was led by Anna McLeod, an associate professor at the University of Durham, who utilized observations from both telescopes to accurately map out the three-dimensional arrangement of the Pillars. This detailed reconstruction reveals that the formations are not simply aligned but are spread across a vast area of space, offering a new perspective on their complex structure.

Frank Summers, the principal visualization scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), explained that the experience is designed to let viewers perceive the three-dimensional structure of the Pillars and appreciate the differences when viewed in Hubble’s visible light compared to Webb’s infrared view.
