The slay pace of the show is starting to be a bit annoying, but since I love the series, with the exception of what was done to the series at HBO for just that last season, I’m watching it all.
Sunday night’s episode of “House of the Dragon” pivoted dramatically from the previous week’s dragon battles to a web of political intrigue following the tragic demise of Rhaenys and her dragon Meleys, along with the severe injuries inflicted on King Aegon II and his dragon Sunfyre. This densely packed hour of television unpacks layers of political maneuvering that warrant multiple viewings to fully appreciate the complexities.

As dawn breaks over King’s Landing, the grim spectacle of Ser Criston Cole’s army advancing towards the city gates sets a somber tone. Among them, the severed head of the dragon Meleys, displayed as a trophy, stirs fear and dark whispers among the onlookers. Inside the Red Keep, the gravely injured King Aegon II is hastily carried in, his body grievously burned and his Valyrian steel armor melted onto him, casting doubt on his survival prospects.
The episode keenly explores the ensuing power struggles. Alicent Hightower finds herself visiting Ser Criston Cole, who, despite his new titles as Hand of the King and Commander of the King’s Guard, is derisively called the “Kingmaker.” Cole, still haunted by the battlefield’s horrors, and Alicent, grappling with her diminishing influence, epitomize the internal conflicts raging within the Red Keep.

At a tense Small Council meeting, Alicent’s attempts to dispute Prince Aemond’s capability to rule fall on deaf ears, with only Grand Maester Orwylle supporting her. The political chess game sees Alicent increasingly isolated as Ser Larys Strong and Ser Criston Cole throw their support behind Aemond, solidifying his claim as the rightful heir.
Meanwhile, Daemon Targaryen at Harrenhal wrestles with his ambitions and frustrations. He shares his visions of ruling King’s Landing, influenced perhaps by the witch Alys Rivers. His brutal methods in the Riverlands, however, do more to repel than to rally local lords to his cause, highlighting his challenges in gaining support.
Back on Dragonstone, Rhaenyra Targaryen contends with her own council’s skepticism and her son Jacerys’s eagerness to forge new alliances. Their dialogue about potentially finding other Targaryen-blooded allies to bond with dragons underscores the desperate strategies they are considering to fortify their position.
