I’ve seen all of the past movies so now I feel compelled to see this one.
The latest installment in the “Alien” franchise, titled “Alien: Romulus,” made a chilling debut at San Diego Comic-Con, promising fans a blend of blood, gore, and suspense. Director Fede Alvarez, along with cast members Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu, appeared in Hall H to discuss the upcoming film, set to hit theaters on August 16.

“Alien: Romulus” is set between the events of Ridley Scott’s “Alien” and James Cameron’s sequel “Aliens.” The plot centers around a group of young people on a distant planet who find themselves facing the franchise’s iconic and terrifying Xenomorphs. The presentation included three new clips that highlighted the film’s intense mix of science fiction and horror.
In the first clip, the audience saw the newest “Alien” colonists encounter Xenomorphs, facehuggers, and chestbursters. The scene began with a haunting rendition of the poem “I Have A Rendezvous With Death,” setting a sinister tone. David Jonsson’s character, Andy, is shown being repaired with parts from another damaged synthetic, only to have the colonists discover they are surrounded by alien pods ready to hatch.
Another clip featured Spaeny’s character, Rain Carradine, trapped in an escape ship with Aileen Wu’s Navarro. The tension escalates when Navarro realizes she has an alien inside her, which soon bursts out in a gruesome scene.
The Comic-Con experience reached a climax when the exhibit hall went dark, sirens blared, and animatronic facehuggers scuttled across the stage, simulating a real-life chestburster moment. This was followed by a final clip showing Rain desperately trying to escape a fully formed Xenomorph in a spaceship corridor. Audience members were given alien facehugger masks for a photo opportunity with the cast and director.

The cast discussed the pressure of joining such an iconic franchise. Isabela Merced, who plays Kay in the film, acknowledged the weight of expectations, while Jonsson mentioned their effort to “disassociate from the pressure” of being part of the “Alien” universe. Ridley Scott, the creator of the original “Alien,” and Guillermo del Toro joined via video to ask the cast questions. Alvarez expressed his admiration for the original 1979 “Alien,” naming it his favorite, while gently noting “AVPR: Aliens vs Predator – Requiem” as perhaps a less successful entry.
