Since I loved the first movie, I had to watch the rest. So far, I’m impressed with the minimum amount of BS in the way of woke nonsense. If they keep at it, they may very well start making serious money again.
The latest installment in the “Deadpool” franchise, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” has shattered box office records with a staggering $205 million domestic debut and a worldwide launch of $438.3 million. The film’s opening weekend marks the biggest debut ever for an R-rated film, surpassing the previous record held by the original “Deadpool” in 2016, which opened with $133.7 million. This achievement also makes it the eighth-biggest opening of all time among all films, not adjusted for inflation.

Director Shawn Levy, alongside stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, celebrated the success of the film, which exceeded even the most optimistic expectations. Reynolds, who has been deeply involved in the production and promotion of the movie, expressed his excitement over the broad appeal of the film, describing it as the “first four-quadrant, R-rated film.” This means that despite its R rating, the movie is designed to appeal to all demographics, including those under 25 and both male and female audiences.
The film’s success is not only a testament to its wide appeal but also highlights the potential of R-rated films to achieve massive box office success when executed well. The audience demographic breakdown showed a broad range of viewers, with significant numbers in every age group from teenagers to those over 55. This diverse audience turnout is unusual for R-rated films, which typically see lower numbers in younger age groups.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” also set several other records, including the biggest opening for Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and director Shawn Levy, as well as the fifth-biggest superhero film opening and the largest July opening ever. It also marked Marvel Studios’ biggest launch since “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in December 2021.
Reynolds, who co-wrote the script with Shawn Levy, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells, credited the success to the creative freedom allowed by the R rating. This rating enabled the filmmakers to deliver an intense, comedic, and action-packed experience that resonated with audiences. The film’s production journey was marked by challenges, including the Disney-Fox merger, the COVID-19 pandemic, and production shutdowns due to strikes.
Despite these challenges, Reynolds expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with close friends and the talented post-production team, highlighting the dedication and hard work that went into making “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The film’s success also underscored the promotional prowess of Marvel and Disney, with Reynolds acknowledging the learning experience of witnessing their marketing strategies in action.
