Poking the bear has not gone well on the global stage. Creating conflict with a nation that has more nuclear weapons than the United States, is lunacy on so many levels. With Ukraine facing a total collapse and defeat at the hands of the Russian military, the conflict is taking on new levels of escalation.
Russia has escalated its military posturing by launching the third phase of its tactical nuclear weapons drills, a move that has rippled through global diplomatic circles. The Kremlin asserts that this stage, announced by Russia’s Defense Ministry, is a direct reaction to what it describes as provocative threats from Western countries supportive of Ukraine.
The third stage of exercises for Russia’s non-strategic nuclear forces has commenced. This phase focuses on maintaining the readiness of personnel and equipment to perform combat missions.

Initiated by President Vladimir Putin in May, these drills first tested the operational readiness of nonstrategic nuclear weapons in the Southern Military District. By June, the scope widened to include Belarusian forces, signaling a deepening military alliance. Now, this third phase stretches across the Southern and Central Military Districts, intensifying preparations for potential combat scenarios involving nonstrategic nukes.
The backdrop of these exercises is fraught with geopolitical tension. Moscow claims this escalation is a response to comments from the former U.K. Foreign Minister David Cameron, who suggested Ukrainian forces might use British-supplied arms against Russian targets. This, the Kremlin argues, constitutes a direct provocation, prompting a muscular show of force.
