In the crowded landscape of dating apps, a new entrant called “Date Like Goblins” aims to revolutionize the way people connect by integrating gaming into the dating experience. Launched via Kickstarter, this innovative platform is designed for those who feel the traditional dating app experience lacks authenticity or comfort, especially for introverted or neurodivergent individuals.

The app sets itself apart by encouraging users to be their true selves, or as they term it, “goblin mode.” This concept encourages participants to drop the polished, often superficial personas that many adopt on traditional dating platforms. Instead, Date Like Goblins invites users to engage in activities that are likely closer to how they genuinely spend their time—playing games. Users create profiles, answer prompts, and upload photos (optional), just like other dating apps. However, the unique twist comes when a match is found: instead of meeting for a coffee or a drink, users can schedule a time to play a game together, ranging from popular options like World of Warcraft to simpler mobile games, all while chatting via Discord.
The idea for Date Like Goblins emerged from the frustrations many people, including the app’s creator Lise Keeney, experienced with traditional dating apps. Keeney, a publicist, found that the emphasis on curated images and brief bios often obscured deeper connections. She designed the app as a more authentic alternative, particularly for those who may struggle with face-to-face interactions or feel more comfortable expressing themselves in a gaming environment.

This innovative approach taps into a growing trend among singles who are tired of the swipe-left, swipe-right mechanics of mainstream dating apps. According to a 2022 Pew Research survey, more than half of people who have never been married have tried a dating app at some point. However, only about 10% of partnered adults met their significant others this way. This discontent has led to the rise of alternative methods, including “Date Me” docs and even leveraging AI for conversations. Date Like Goblins is part of this movement, offering a niche yet inclusive platform that caters to a specific community.
The app’s initial beta users have included people who are neurodivergent, immunocompromised, or introverted—groups that often find traditional dating scenarios challenging. For these users, engaging in a shared activity like gaming can serve as a more comfortable and less intimidating way to get to know someone. Keeney emphasizes that the app’s design allows users to connect based on mutual interests and activities, rather than solely on appearance or superficial traits.
Date Like Goblins also encourages more in-depth profiles, featuring quirky prompts that go beyond typical questions. For example, one prompt asks users to choose between living in a world where every song is by Pitbull or a world where “Fireball” by Pitbull is the only song, but covered by every artist ever. Such prompts aim to spark conversation and reveal personality traits that might not come through in a standard dating profile.
Despite its niche focus, the app is part of a broader shift in online dating, where smaller platforms are gaining traction by offering a more personalized experience. Apps like Grindr and Feeld have shown that specialized platforms can be successful by catering to specific communities, whether based on sexual orientation, lifestyle, or interests. While mainstream apps like Tinder and Bumble continue to dominate the market, the appeal of niche platforms lies in their ability to offer a more boutique-like, user-focused experience.
