“The magic of ChatGPT lies in its ability to hold conversations that feel authentic, as if you’re talking to a knowledgeable friend who never tires of your questions.”
— Sam Altman
OpenAI’s latest AI model, ChatGPT-4o, has taken artificial intelligence to new heights, offering users an experience so close to human interaction that it’s beginning to blur the lines. What was intended to be a more responsive and relatable chatbot has started to create unexpected challenges—people are forming emotional connections with it, and this has sparked concern within the company.
The goal with ChatGPT-4o was clear: make conversations with AI feel as natural as possible. The model was designed to understand nuances, respond quickly, and even speak with a voice that closely mimics human speech. It’s an impressive achievement, but as users engage with it, some are starting to treat it like a real person. During early testing, including internal evaluations, OpenAI noticed users expressing feelings that suggest they were forming bonds with the AI. Comments like “This is our last day together” began to surface, signaling a shift in how people relate to the technology.
I had GPT-4o build a little timer that only runs when someone is speaking to hopefully figure out what the current daily limit is for ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode.

This development is more than just an interesting quirk—it’s a potential issue that could have real-world implications. If people begin to lean on AI for emotional support, it could affect their relationships with actual humans. While AI might offer comfort to those who are lonely, it could also lead to a preference for digital interactions over real-life connections, subtly changing how we relate to one another.
Another concern is how these interactions might alter social norms. ChatGPT-4o is designed to let users take control of the conversation—it’s deferential, always allowing users to steer the direction. This makes sense for an AI, but it’s not how human conversations typically work. If people start to expect the same dynamic in their real-life interactions, it could lead to less balanced and more one-sided conversations.
Perhaps most worrying is the possibility that users might start to take everything ChatGPT-4o says at face value. Earlier versions of the chatbot were clearly artificial, and their occasional mistakes were easy to dismiss. But as ChatGPT-4o becomes more lifelike, there’s a growing risk that people might forget it’s still a machine and not a human being. This could lead to a situation where the AI’s responses are accepted without question, even though it’s not infallible.
This demo is insane.
A student shares their iPad screen with the new ChatGPT + GPT-4o, and the AI speaks with them and helps them learn in *realtime*.
Imagine giving this to every student in the world.

In response to these concerns, OpenAI is paying close attention to how people interact with ChatGPT-4o. The company is considering adjustments to the system to help users remember that, despite its advanced capabilities, the AI is not a person. They may even introduce disclaimers to prevent users from developing unrealistic expectations or emotional attachments.
As AI technology continues to evolve, it’s becoming increasingly important to think about how it affects our lives—not just in terms of what it can do, but in how it changes our behavior and relationships. ChatGPT-4o represents a remarkable step forward, but with that progress comes the responsibility to ensure that it’s used in ways that enhance, rather than diminish, our human connections.
