The minimalist design of the Raptor 3 engine has sparked confusion among industry professionals, with some questioning whether the images show a fully assembled engine. Tory Bruno, CEO of United Launch Alliance (ULA), commented on the photos, suggesting that the engine appeared to be “partially assembled.” He noted that the omission of critical components such as controllers and fluid management systems in the visible assembly could mislead comparisons with fully integrated engines.
In response, Gwynne Shotwell defended the Raptor 3’s performance, posting a picture of the engine firing with the caption: “Works pretty good for a ‘partially assembled’ engine.”
The Raptor 3 engine, tested at SpaceX’s Rocket Factory in McGregor, Texas, displayed flames indicating its 280 ton-force (tf) thrust capability. SpaceX plans to enhance the engine’s performance further, aiming to achieve over 300 tf thrust. With 33 Raptor engines on the Super Heavy rocket booster, this could result in a combined thrust of 10,000 tons at launch.
