In the West Bank, a grim toll has mounted as the Palestinian health ministry reports that 22 individuals have lost their lives in Israel’s ongoing military operation in Jenin. This operation, launched by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Wednesday, comes amid rising concerns over potential terrorist threats in the region.
The IDF states that 14 militants have been killed so far, and dozens of explosive devices have been neutralized in the cities of Jenin and Tulkarm, as well as in the Nur al-Shams refugee camp. On Saturday, the Israeli army announced the death of Staff Sgt. Elkana Navon, a 20-year-old soldier from Petah Tikva, who was killed during a firefight in the Jenin refugee camp. According to military sources, two Hamas operatives were hiding in a building the IDF stormed, leading to a brief but fatal exchange of gunfire that resulted in the operatives’ deaths.

Navon, who was deeply involved in his community and studied at the Hesder Yeshiva in Kiryat Shmona, was remembered fondly by Rabbi Ariel Barkai, who praised his vitality and compassion. Navon’s death underscores the personal cost of the ongoing conflict, even as the broader operation continues with a focus on counterterrorism and weapons confiscation.

Since the conflict’s escalation last October, Israeli forces have arrested around 5,000 individuals in the West Bank, with nearly 2,000 of these detainees linked to Hamas. The army has also demolished 29 homes associated with these militants since the start of hostilities.
