Charges have been filed against a 17-year-old boy in connection with the shooting of San Francisco 49ers player Ricky Pearsall, as announced by the San Francisco District Attorney’s office. The teen faces three serious charges: attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and attempted second-degree robbery.
San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins expressed the city’s collective trauma from the incident and emphasized her office’s commitment to ensuring accountability. “The city has been traumatized, and it’s now my job and my office’s job to make sure that we have accountability,” Jenkins stated.

While the District Attorney’s office does not decide whether a juvenile will be tried as an adult, Jenkins has the option to request a fitness hearing before a judge. As of now, no decision has been made regarding whether such a hearing will be requested. The teen is scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday afternoon at the Youth Guidance Center in San Francisco.
The San Francisco Police Department is actively investigating the incident, seeking out all available footage from the area to construct a comprehensive timeline of the events leading up to and following the shooting.
Ricky Pearsall, a 23-year-old rookie for the 49ers, was released from the hospital just 24 hours after being shot in San Francisco’s Union Square during what is being described as an attempted robbery. The 49ers stated that Pearsall “sustained a bullet wound to his chest.” His mother, Erin Pearsall, expressed her gratitude on Facebook, describing her son as “extremely lucky.”
49ers General Manager John Lynch shared that Pearsall’s recovery has been nothing short of miraculous. “By the grace of God, Ricky Pearsall is here with the team and doing really well,” Lynch said. “He’s doing remarkably, so much better today than he was yesterday. Really, really miraculous. Didn’t touch organs and feels like all the nerve stuff is good.”
Lynch also mentioned that Pearsall had been shopping for luggage for game day road trips when the attack occurred. The 49ers have shown strong support for Pearsall since the incident. Lynch recounted a heartwarming moment when Pearsall was able to join a team party via FaceTime from the hospital, which lifted the spirits of both Pearsall and his teammates.

Teammates have expressed their relief and gratitude for Pearsall’s recovery. “Just super happy, super happy that he’s alive,” said 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Offensive lineman Jake Brendel echoed these sentiments, saying, “Thank God Ricky’s alive and he’s healthy and he’s going to make a full recovery.”
Due to his injuries, the National Football League has placed Pearsall on the reserve/non-football injury list, meaning he will miss at least four games this season, as reported by ESPN.
