    In an urgent plea for support, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy co-hosted a summit with Albania’s government, seeking increased ammunition to counter Russian advances. The summit aimed to garner further backing for Kyiv from southeastern European countries, acknowledging signs of war fatigue in the region.

    Formulate a compromise that Ukraine could live with, that ends the war, which triggers NATO membership for future threats. Ukraine’s future could mean a smaller country, but a protected country, with EU membership likely. Less can be more- Ready, Steady…

    Zelenskyy emphasized the critical need for armaments, particularly ammunition, just over two years since Russia’s full-scale invasion. During his impassioned speech at the summit, he framed the situation as a decisive moment for Ukraine, stating, “I think this is the question of: Will we stand or not.”

    Russian forces have gained momentum on the Ukrainian battlefield, exploiting shortages of weapons and soldiers for Ukraine’s military. Analysts note Russian attacks on four parallel axes in the northeast, intending to push deeper into Ukraine-held western parts of the Donetsk region and infiltrate the Kharkiv region to the north.

    Earlier this month, Russia strategically seized the eastern city of Avdiivka, overpowering Ukrainian forces with superior numbers, air support, and artillery firepower. Fierce fighting ensued, with Russia pushing Kyiv’s forces out of three villages to the city’s west in recent days.

    Zelenskyy’s plea for support led him to Albania, where he joined a summit involving eleven southeastern European countries, along with EU and other international officials. This visit followed his advocacy for a peace plan and the release of prisoners of war during a stop in Saudi Arabia.

    At the summit, Zelenskyy aimed to foster solidarity among Ukraine and Western Balkan countries, asserting that they all deserved membership in the European Union and NATO if they choose. He emphasized the security and economic benefits that these alliances have brought to Europe.

    Securing additional support is vital for Ukraine, particularly as Zelenskyy revealed on Sunday that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action since Russia’s invasion—the first official confirmation of the country’s losses.

    Acknowledging the impact of ammunition shortages on the battlefield, Zelenskyy warned of potential replication of Russia’s devastating tactics in Avdiivka if timely Western aid for air-defense systems, long-range weapons, and artillery supplies does not materialize.

    In regions like Bakhmut, where Russia secured victory last May, ongoing battles persist, with Russian troops attempting to advance toward Chasiv Yar. The operational group overseeing the eastern front line reported Russia’s reinforcement with assault units and ongoing heavy fighting on the outskirts of the city.

    Further north in the Kharkiv region, Russian troops are pressing forward around Lyman and Kupiansk, bordering Russia. Ukraine has urged Western leaders to enhance joint production of weapons and ammunition, bolster Ukrainian air defenses, and increase pressure on Russia through expanded sanctions.

    However, not all countries at the summit support Ukraine’s stance against Russia. Serbia, a Kremlin ally, has refused to align with EU sanctions and continues signing cooperation agreements with Moscow. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic insisted that the summit statement exclude calls for sanctions on Russia and avoid language highlighting Russia’s negative influence in the Balkan region.

    Albania, a NATO member since 2009 and an EU membership candidate, stands firmly in support of Kyiv. It has provided military assistance, including ammunition and training for the Ukrainian military. Albania has also welcomed Ukrainian refugees and joined international sanctions against Russian officials and institutions.

    As the summit concluded, Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of vigilance among all participating countries regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s next moves. He underscored the collaborative effort as a factor preventing Putin from prevailing and urged continued cooperation to counter the ongoing threat.
