These two make a great pair for such movies. Look forward to another in the franchise,
Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth installment in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-led buddy cop series, had a strong domestic debut, earning $56 million from 3,885 theaters. Internationally, it garnered $48.6 million, bringing its worldwide total to $104.6 million. This film follows the 1995 “Bad Boys,” 2003 “Bad Boys II,” and 2020 “Bad Boys for Life.” Notably, it’s Smith’s first major release since his controversial incident with Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars.
With our 2024 Box Office Draft wrapped up, we are left waiting to see what will happen…Will Bad Boys somehow perform well? Will Inside Out 2 reach the levels the first one did? And will any of these movies outside of Despicable Me 4 have a shot at a billion? pic.twitter.com/B3yLax18KI

The film’s opening, while impressive, didn’t surpass the franchise record set by “Bad Boys for Life,” which opened with $62 million. Nonetheless, the solid start of “Bad Boys 4” provides some optimism for movie theater owners, especially in a challenging year where ticket sales have lagged 26% behind 2023. The lackluster performance of other blockbusters like Universal’s “The Fall Guy” and Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” has contributed to a slow May and June.

Hollywood is hopeful that “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” will maintain its momentum and stimulate moviegoing through the summer. Upcoming releases like Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” and “A Quiet Place: Day One” are anticipated to boost ticket sales. According to senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian, the next few weeks are crucial for turning the summer box office around.

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” received mixed reviews, with a favorable “A-” CinemaScore from audiences but only 64% on Rotten Tomatoes. IMAX screens accounted for $5.2 million (9.3%) of domestic sales and $8.2 million globally. Directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the film follows detectives Mike and Marcus as they uncover corruption within the Miami Police Department, eventually becoming fugitives to solve the case. The movie, which cost $100 million to produce, is poised for a successful theatrical run, though it may not surpass the earnings of “Bad Boys for Life,” which grossed $206 million domestically and $426 million globally.

Sony also celebrated success with “The Garfield Movie,” which took second place at the box office, earning $10 million. After three weeks, the animated film has grossed $68.6 million in North America and $192 million globally, a solid return on its $60 million budget.
Conversely, Dakota Fanning’s supernatural horror film “The Watchers” debuted weakly, landing in fourth place with $7 million from 3,351 venues. It added $4.7 million overseas, for a global total of $11.7 million. Poor reception from critics and audiences, reflected in a “C-” CinemaScore and 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, contributed to its underperformance. Directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, the film follows a 28-year-old artist stalked by mysterious creatures in a remote Irish forest.

Despite a slow start, it has rebounded, earning $93.5 million domestically and $160.7 million worldwide.
