Yellowstone was one of the very few shows I was willing to give a try in the last few years. Costner was damn good in it in my opinion, yet so many murders, and no accountability. Not sure how I feel about that, but Kevin Costner not returning is a disappointment to all.
Kevin Costner has announced he will not return to the popular television series “Yellowstone,” marking a significant change for the show as it approaches its final episodes. This decision concludes a series of negotiations and conflicts that began to surface publicly early in 2023.
Costner, known for his role as John Dutton, has been a central figure in “Yellowstone” since its inception. The series, which premiered in 2018, quickly became a hit, largely due to Costner’s performance and the show’s gripping portrayal of ranching and land disputes in the modern American West.

The initial reports of trouble on set emerged in February 2023, suggesting that Costner and Taylor Sheridan, the show’s co-creator, were at odds over filming schedules. Costner reportedly wanted to reduce his shooting days to accommodate his other projects, specifically his four-film Western saga “Horizon,” which he is co-writing, producing, directing, and starring in. These demands led to a rumored fallout that threatened to disrupt the production of “Yellowstone’s” fifth season.
Despite attempts to negotiate a compromise that would allow Costner to participate in the filming of the second half of season five, the disagreements persisted. Costner’s proposal to work for a limited time was not well-received, and discussions reportedly broke down. This conflict was exacerbated by reports that Paramount Network and Sheridan were considering ending the series after season five or potentially continuing without Costner.

In response to these rumors, Paramount announced in May 2023 that “Yellowstone” would conclude with the fifth season, which would be split into two parts. The network also greenlit a new “Yellowstone” spinoff starring Matthew McConaughey, signaling a new direction for the franchise.
Throughout this period, Costner expressed his affection for “Yellowstone” and his character, emphasizing the impact the series had on his career. However, he also voiced frustrations over the handling of the negotiations and the impact on his personal projects. His departure was confirmed when he stated in a public announcement that he would not be returning for the final episodes scheduled to premiere in November 2023.
