Margot Robbie, widely recognized for her success in the film industry, is now venturing into the gin market with her latest enterprise, Papa Salt. Alongside her husband and business partner, Tom Ackerley, and three close friends, Robbie has embarked on a journey to conquer the spirits industry.
Robbie, who recently starred in and produced the blockbuster movie Barbie, which grossed $1.4 billion worldwide, shared with The Times of London her experiences with her new venture. She described the process of creating and marketing gin as “refreshing” compared to the film industry. According to Robbie, the tangible nature of a product like gin offers a more straightforward business model compared to the speculative and intangible aspects of film production.

Selling ideas is the wild business of filmmaking.. You never know how much it will earn, who will watch it, or how it will be received,” Robbie explained. “With gin, it’s more predictable. You can lay everything out on a spreadsheet, which you can’t do with a movie idea.”
Despite her new venture into gin, Robbie’s film production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, has achieved significant success since its inception in 2014. With a portfolio including hits like I, Tonya (2017), Promising Young Woman (2020), Saltburn (2023), and the recent Barbie, LuckyChap has accumulated 25 Academy Award nominations, with Allison Janney been awarded an Oscar for her performance in I, Tonya. The company also boasts 18 BAFTA nominations and substantial box-office revenue.

Robbie expressed initial reservations about entering the crowded celebrity-driven spirits market, acknowledging other celebrities like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Kylie Minogue, who have also launched successful alcohol brands. However, she emphasized that for her, venturing into the gin business is driven by genuine interest and passion rather than merely a lucrative opportunity.
