You can’t win them all as they say. It is not so uncommon to lose seven games in a row. As a baseball fan for many decades, I have seen such records in even the best teams.
The Toronto Blue Jays faced another setback on Monday night, losing their seventh straight game in a dramatic walk-off, despite leading 6-2 going into the eighth inning, resulting in a 7-6 loss. This string of losses places them at 35-43 for the season, positioning them at the bottom of the AL East standings and 7.5 games behind in the wild-card race, only ahead of teams like the Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, and Chicago White Sox in terms of distance from postseason contention.

Amidst this slump, the Blue Jays are approaching the trade deadline with significant decisions looming, particularly regarding whether to retain or trade key players like Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., with Bichette recently returning from the injured list. Two years back, Guerrero Jr. famously declared he would never join the AL East rival New York Yankees, a sentiment rooted deeply in family loyalty. Yet, in a recent turn of events, Guerrero softened his previous hard stance in an interview with the Spanish media outlet Virus Deportivo, acknowledging the business nature of baseball and his openness to helping any team if the situation arises.
Well, this just about sums it up.

Guerrero’s shift in perspective comes at a time when the Yankees could use a boost. They recently lost Anthony Rizzo to a broken arm, and while rookie Ben Rice has temporarily filled the void with commendable performances, the Yankees could greatly benefit from a player of Guerrero’s caliber. Guerrero, aged 25, boasts a solid season with a batting average of .286 and 10 home runs, improving to .328 in his last 50 games. This contrasts starkly with the Yankees’ current first basemen, who collectively have underperformed with a .236 batting average.
Despite the potential fit and the opportunity to dramatically improve their lineup with Guerrero, a trade remains highly speculative and not anticipated. Meanwhile, the Yankees are leading the AL East with a 52-28 record, although they have faced challenges recently, losing seven of their last ten games and four out of their last five series. They are set to face the Mets in the upcoming two-game Subway Series starting Tuesday.
