It’s time to see some movies. I don’t know about everyone else, but I am more of a home theater type of person. Like the latest Eddie Murphy movie that went straight to Netflix, which I just watched last night, the comfort and privacy of being home kills any theater experience. At least in my opinion..
The latest installment in the “Despicable Me” franchise, “Despicable Me 4,” has made a strong showing at the box office, pulling in $47.6 million within its first two days of release. With a budget of $100 million, considerably less than many high-profile animated films which often cost around $200 million, the film is on track to earn an estimated $120 million over the five-day holiday period. This marks a significant achievement for Universal and Illumination, bolstered by the return of Steve Carell as the voice of Gru and new additions Will Ferrell and Sofia Vergara, adding fresh dynamics to the beloved series.

The “Despicable Me” series has long been a cornerstone of Illumination’s success, spawning several sequels and even spin-offs centered around the Minions. These characters have not only become iconic in their own right but have also helped Illumination establish other hits like “The Secret Life of Pets” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
Meanwhile, “Inside Out 2” has been performing exceptionally well, rejuvenating Pixar and Disney’s reputation after some recent setbacks. It brought in $7.2 million on Independence Day alone, pushing its domestic total to $503.6 million and securing its position as the third highest-grossing animated film in the U.S. It has also performed well globally, with earnings surpassing $1.07 billion.

Additionally, Kevin Costner’s ambitious Western, “Horizon: An American Saga,” which he partially self-financed, faced challenges at the box office, earning only $1.9 million. Despite its underwhelming performance and critical reception, Costner plans to continue the saga with multiple sequels.

This year’s box office contrasts sharply with the previous year, where the faith-based drama “Sound of Freedom” led the holiday earnings, followed by the latest “Indiana Jones” installment, which underperformed. These shifts highlight the fluctuating nature of moviegoer interest and the impact of star power and franchise loyalty on cinematic success.
