The area has seen eruptions for many hundreds of years.
Italy’s civil protection agency issued a red alert on Friday for Sicily, the highest level of warning, due to increased volcanic activity from Mount Etna and Mount Stromboli. Both volcanoes erupted, spewing ash and lava into the sky and sea, leading to the temporary closure of Catania’s airport. The airport’s runway became unusable due to volcanic ash, halting all arrivals and departures.

By late afternoon, the airport reopened with limited operations, but nearly 70 flights were canceled, and many were diverted to Palermo, Sicily’s capital. Both volcanoes are known for their regular activity, but recent eruptions have been notably intense. A Sicilian firefighting inspector noted the unusually high level of activity.
Mount Etna, located near Catania, had been dormant for approximately four years until eruptions began about two weeks ago, culminating in Thursday’s significant explosion. A volcanologist reported that the ash cloud from Etna reached an altitude of 15,000 feet, with winds spreading the ash to nearby towns. In response, Catania’s mayor temporarily banned motorcycles and imposed a speed limit of 20 mph for other vehicles to ensure safety due to the ash fallout.
Mount Stromboli, located in the Aeolian Islands, is also under close surveillance. Nello Musmeci, Italy’s civil protection minister, indicated that the situation is being monitored closely, and evacuation plans are in place if necessary.

The double eruption has disrupted daily life and travel on the island. Despite the airport reopening, the effects of the eruptions continue to impact transportation and local infrastructure. The increased activity has drawn significant attention from both local authorities and the scientific community, highlighting the unpredictable nature of these volcanic giants.
The eruptions serve as a reminder of the powerful natural forces at play in the region. While both Mount Etna and Mount Stromboli are familiar with frequent eruptions, the recent activity underscores the importance of vigilance and preparedness. Authorities are maintaining heightened alert levels and are ready to respond to any further escalation.
These events have also brought about a renewed focus on the region’s emergency response capabilities. The coordination between local government, emergency services, and scientific experts has been crucial in managing the situation and ensuring public safety. The residents and visitors to Sicily are advised to stay informed and adhere to any safety measures and guidelines issued by the authorities.
