I’ve always been a fan of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. Their outfits and bodies had me staring at any magazine showing photos of them, before the internet.
Netflix’s documentary series “America’s Sweethearts” offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, capturing the highs and lows from auditions through the 2023 football season. Since its release in late June, the series has quickly climbed the ranks to become one of the platform’s most-watched shows. But why is it so captivating, and does it inadvertently set unrealistic standards for perfection?
The allure of getting an inside look at what it takes to be a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader is undeniable. Known for their strict rules, demanding performances, and iconic uniforms, the cheerleaders epitomize physical fitness and aesthetic appeal. Each year, aspiring cheerleaders must audition, regardless of whether they’ve been on the team before, ensuring that only the most talented—and often, the thinnest—make the cut.

Neuropsychologist Judy Ho explains the fascination: “People want to be a fly on the wall because it’s very, very hard to get in. The cheerleaders are beautiful, sexy, and their dancing is amazing.” However, some viewers might tune in for less flattering reasons, perhaps seeking flaws in these seemingly perfect women to feel better about their own lives.
The phenomenon might also be driven by the halo effect, where beauty leads people to attribute other positive qualities to a person. Yet, as Ho points out, attractive women often face the opposite stereotype—they are presumed to lack intelligence or skill. This cultural stereotype is an underlying theme in the docuseries.
The series dedicates significant screen time to key figures like director Kelli Finglass and choreographer Judy Trammell, as well as several cheerleaders. It showcases their varied backgrounds and the supportive friendships within the group. Despite their achievements and multifaceted lives, the series presents them within a framework that emphasizes appearance and perfection.
“Real cheerleaders don’t really respect the idea that the Dallas Cowboys consider themselves ‘cheerleaders.'” 👀

Developmental psychologist Jennifer Harriger highlights this paradox: “We live in an appearance-obsessed world. The message is that your value is higher if you’re beautiful, regardless of your other accomplishments.” The docuseries, while inspirational, inadvertently reinforces the notion that beauty enhances one’s value.
One episode starkly contrasts the cheerleaders’ professional accomplishments with a group of men ogling their looks in the locker room. This moment encapsulates the conflicting messages about beauty and worth. It underscores that, despite the women’s talents and contributions, superficial judgments often dominate perceptions.
The mixed messages can be problematic, especially for younger viewers. Harriger warns that focusing on weight, body size, and appearance can be harmful. It teaches young people that their value is tied to their looks, promoting unrealistic beauty standards that can lead to negative self-perception.
Yet, the series has its merits. It provides an eye-opening look at the hard work behind each performance and the charity work the cheerleaders engage in. This aspect of the docuseries reveals the dedication and heart of the women, offering a deeper appreciation for their roles beyond the superficial.
