France secured a 1-0 victory to advance to the semifinals, but the atmosphere was charged throughout the match. The rivalry between the two nations was fueled by a recent history of contentious encounters. The senior Argentine men’s team had previously been recorded singing racist chants toward French players after winning the Copa America, prompting the French federation to file an official complaint. Although this Olympic game featured mostly under-23 players who were not involved in the Copa America incident, it marked the first meeting between the two nations since that controversy. Adding to the rivalry, Argentina had defeated France in the 2022 World Cup Final.

It remains unclear what specifically ignited the altercation on Friday, but France head coach Thierry Henry was quick to apologize for the post-match disorder. “We don’t take this match as revenge because the World Cup was with other teams,” Henry stated, via Argentine reporter Gaston Edul. “Having scored the goal quickly gave us a decision. I apologize for the final disturbance. It’s not what I wanted and I couldn’t control it. In fact, they kicked out a player.”

Center-back Nicolas Otamendi, a member of Argentina’s World Cup-winning squad and one of the overage players for the Olympics, voiced his frustration over French players celebrating provocatively in front of Argentine fans. “It makes me very angry that they went to where the relatives were to celebrate in their faces,” Otamendi said, via Edul. “If he feels like celebrating, let him come to where we are and we’ll solve it there. We talk about what needs to be talked about.”
Despite the heated end to the match, France will move on to face Egypt in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, Morocco will take on Spain.
