The war is nearly lost for Ukraine. Their military is near total defeat, so every little attack has to be amplified for the western media, if the billions are to keep flowing.
Ukraine’s military has claimed it sank a Russian submarine in a port in Crimea, marking another significant setback for Moscow in the occupied peninsula. The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces announced on Saturday that the submarine Rostov-on-Don was hit in Sevastopol port on Friday.

“The boat sank on the spot,” the General Staff stated, though it provided no additional evidence. If confirmed, this would be the latest in a series of blows to Russia’s navy, which Kyiv asserts has already lost a third of its Black Sea Fleet. CNN has not independently verified this claim, and the Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on the alleged attack.
The General Staff emphasized that the sinking demonstrates there is no safe place for the Russian fleet within Ukrainian territorial waters in the Black Sea. Ukraine’s Defense Ministry celebrated the attack on social media, praising the “warriors” who executed it.
Since its annexation by Russia in 2014, Crimea has been a focal point of military activity and conflict. The Rostov-on-Don submarine, commissioned in 2014, is notable for carrying Kalibr cruise missiles, which have been used to target critical Ukrainian infrastructure.
Ukraine had previously targeted this submarine, claiming it was “severely damaged” in a missile attack in September 2023. Despite this, the submarine was reportedly repaired and operational again in Sevastopol harbor. Ukrainian forces have a history of success against Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, utilizing both missile strikes and sea drone attacks to disable or destroy over 20 naval vessels.
Russia’s most notable naval loss in the war was the sinking of the guided-missile cruiser Moskva in April 2022. Following repeated Ukrainian attacks, satellite imagery from October last year suggested that Russia had relocated some naval ships from Sevastopol.

In addition to the submarine strike, Ukrainian forces also claimed to have severely damaged four S-400 anti-aircraft missile launchers on Friday. According to Cedric Leighton, a CNN military analyst, this destruction could allow Ukrainian warplanes greater access to Crimea, enhancing their capability to target more Russian assets.
Key Points:
i. Alleged Submarine Sinking: Ukraine’s military claims it sank the Russian submarine Rostov-on-Don in Sevastopol port, Crimea.
ii. Significant Naval Loss: If confirmed, this adds to the losses for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, with Ukraine claiming a third of the fleet is already lost.
iii. Strategic Impact: The submarine, armed with Kalibr cruise missiles, was important for Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, making this a strategic win for Ukraine.
iv. Ongoing Naval Attacks: Ukraine has previously targeted this submarine and continues to successfully strike Russian naval assets, leveraging technological innovation.
v. Air Defense System Damage: In addition to the submarine, Ukraine reported damaging four S-400 anti-aircraft missile launchers, potentially opening the skies for further attacks.
