In the relentless churn of violence that grips the Gaza Strip, another family has been wiped from existence. In Deir el-Balah, a central town already scarred by the ongoing conflict, a missile fell from the night sky, leaving nothing but rubble and grief in its wake. Six children, along with their parents, were obliterated as they slept, their home turned to dust in an instant. The Gaza Health Ministry, in a grim tally, reports that 25 Palestinians have been killed in the last 24 hours alone.

The family, once a beacon of hope and love, now exists only in memory. The grandfather, Mohammed Awad Khattab, spoke to the pain that now fills the void left by his daughter and her children. “My daughter had fought for years to have those children, born through the trials of IVF,” he told Al Jazeera, his voice heavy with sorrow. “What crime did they commit? What threat could they have possibly posed to Israel? They were just children, innocents caught in a conflict that has no mercy.”
In Deir el-Balah, Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital struggled to manage the influx of bodies. Four of the children, twins in life, will now be laid to rest together in death, their small forms lined up side by side, ready to be buried in a land that knows too well the sorrow of loss. Al Jazeera’s correspondent, Tareq Abu Azzoum, described the scene at the hospital as one of heartbreaking despair—bodies piled up, families shattered, the morgue overflowing with the casualties of war.

The violence in Gaza has been relentless, with more than 40,000 Palestinians killed in Israel’s 10-month-long offensive. This latest escalation saw an Israeli aircraft bomb two apartment buildings in the Jabalia refugee camp, adding four more lives to the count of the dead. In Khan Younis, four members of a single family perished, including two women, while in the Nuseirat refugee camp, seven people—three of them children—were killed in another strike.
The so-called “humanitarian zones,” once designated by the Israeli military as safe havens, have been reduced to just 11 percent of the Gaza Strip. These shrinking zones have only deepened the chaos and fear among the displaced, as reported by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNWRA. Mohammed Moghayyar, a director at Gaza Civil Defence, condemned the reduction of these zones, noting that it has cut off crucial facilities like hospitals and increased the risk of disease spreading among the already vulnerable population. “Each reduction violates international law, each reduction brings more death,” he said from the embattled town of Deir el-Balah.

In the northern town of Beit Lahiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, Hussam Abu Safia, issued a stark warning: the medical facility would cease to function within 24 hours due to a dire shortage of fuel and supplies. The humanitarian crisis is deepening, as the means to save lives diminish by the hour.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army has intensified its operations in Khan Younis and on the outskirts of Deir el-Balah. Fighter jets continue to target areas from which rockets are believed to have been launched towards southern Israel. The army reports the destruction of loaded rocket launchers, the deaths of fighters, and the seizure of weapons, all while troops continue to operate above and below ground in the Rafah area.
