The National Weather Service (NWS) has activated various weather alerts across all U.S. states, cautioning the public about the impending impact of potent winter storms set to sweep through the nation.
How do people find this stuff? Weathermen are now the weather Feds? Will they turn this into a battle map? Or simply inform us on the weather? Crazy thought, I installed windows(not Microsoft) on all my houses. – Pæŵņ
In an official statement, the NWS emphasized the exceptionally active weather pattern, revealing that every state in the U.S. is under an active NWS Watch, Warning, or Advisory. The NWS alerted citizens to brace for a formidable winter storm, projecting heavy snowfall, robust winds, and blizzard conditions from the mid-Missouri Valley and Midwest to the Great Lakes, persisting until Saturday. Furthermore, the agency highlighted the likelihood of dangerous frigid temperatures engulfing the Rockies and Plains throughout the weekend, accompanied by the potential for severe thunderstorms, featuring strong winds, hail, and even a few tornadoes across the Southeast.
The NWS anticipates the arrival of perilously cold Arctic air in the U.S. heartland over the weekend, with temperatures plummeting below zero for the northern Plains region starting Friday morning. Saturday morning is predicted to witness temperatures as low as minus-20 to minus-30 degrees Fahrenheit in the Plains states, excluding wind chill effects.

When factoring in wind chills, temperatures in parts of the Plains states may reach an alarming minus-35 to minus-50 degrees, raising concerns about frostbite within minutes of exposure. Private forecasters, including AccuWeather, concurred with the NWS, cautioning that the upcoming cold spell could be the “coldest air for the southern Plains” since late 2022. AccuWeather meteorologist Jon Porter emphasized the frigid air’s origin in northwestern Canada, which will surge across the northern Rockies and northern Plains by Saturday before extending southward into Texas and other Southern states on Sunday.
Preceding this, winter storm warnings are currently in effect for the Great Lakes and Midwest states due to a storm traversing the United States. The NWS’s Des Moines office mentioned that storms of this magnitude are relatively rare, occurring approximately once or twice per decade.

By Saturday morning, road crews in Iowa and Nebraska were grappling to keep pace with rapidly falling snow. The Iowa Department of Transportation’s road conditions map displayed that almost every major highway and interstate was either partially or completely covered. Reports indicated “near zero” driver visibility in some areas, exacerbated by wind-driven drifts nullifying plow driver efforts.
Blizzard warnings were declared in southwestern Minnesota on Friday. In Kansas City, Missouri, black ice resulted in numerous accidents as freezing rain created an icy veneer on the roads. Bitterly cold wind chills, with temperatures in the mid-teens and winds exceeding 20 mph, contributed to a wind chill of around 9 below zero.

As of Saturday morning, major airlines had canceled or delayed hundreds of flights at various airports due to adverse weather conditions, as reported by FlightAware. Chicago’s O’Hare Airport and Midway Airport experienced a substantial number of cancellations amid the snowfall. Similar disruptions affected airports in Denver, Seattle, Milwaukee, Detroit, and Kansas City.
Weather experts attribute the frigid conditions to the reappearance of the Arctic mass known as the “polar vortex.” National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientist Amy Butler noted the stratospheric polar vortex stretching across North America, pushing the jet or Arctic air further south. Fox Weather Meteorologist Kendall Smith explained that the cold Arctic air, previously confined over Canada and the Arctic, is now surging into the Lower 48.

This extreme cold is expected to envelop much of Texas and Oklahoma, extending into the coming week. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) issued a warning from January 15 to January 17, citing “extreme cold weather” and heightened “electrical demand” potentially affecting power reserves across the state. Managing about 90 percent of Texas’ power grid, ERCOT reassured the public that grid conditions were expected to be normal, with no current anticipation of an energy emergency. The council pledged to closely monitor the winter weather and employ all available tools to ensure reliable grid management.
