    On January 14, the Texas Military Department (TMD), responsible for overseeing the National Guard, released a statement refuting claims made by a Democratic Congressman and the Biden administration. Contrary to the allegations, the TMD asserted that Mexican authorities had already recovered the bodies of one adult woman and two children from the river before Border Patrol agents sought access to a fenced-off 2.5-mile stretch of the southern border in Eagle Pass on January 12.

    The TMD, in an updated statement, reiterated the inaccuracy of the accusations and clarified that at the time of the Border Patrol’s access request, the drownings had occurred, and Mexican authorities were actively recovering the bodies. The agency highlighted that Border Patrol agents informed TMD personnel on-site about the ongoing recovery efforts by Mexican authorities.

    Furthermore, the TMD disclosed that federal Border Patrol agents sought access to the area to apprehend two additional illegal immigrants who had crossed at the Shelby Park boat ramp. These individuals were presumed to be travel companions of the deceased, according to the agency.

    Of the two illegal immigrants apprehended, one was handed over to the Texas Department of Public Safety, while the other, suffering from hypothermic conditions, was transferred to emergency medical services. The TMD emphasized its continued engagement in monitoring the situation, using lights, night vision goggles, and thermals to ensure the safety of migrants in the river.

    Addressing earlier claims made by the TMD, Governor Abbott criticized Democrats for hastily blaming Texas without verifying the facts. He took to social media, stating that Democrats “forgot to get the facts” in their eagerness to point fingers at Texas for the tragic incident.
