This development, labeled as the “new climate denial,” challenges the prevailing narratives of imminent global catastrophe associated with climate change. The study, conducted by the left-leaning CCDH, has sparked debates about the role of digital platforms, particularly YouTube, in shaping public opinion on climate-related issues.

    The research, based on transcripts from over 12,000 videos across 96 YouTube channels from 2018 to 2023, identified three dominant climate-skeptic narratives: the belief that “climate solutions won’t work,” skepticism towards the reliability of “climate science and the climate movement,” and the perspective that “the impacts of global warming are beneficial or harmless.” These viewpoints saw a substantial increase, comprising 70% of climate-skeptic content on YouTube. Notably, the study found a decline in content asserting that “global warming is not happening.”

    Of particular concern to the CCDH is the impact of this trend on climate action. The group urges major tech platforms, including YouTube, to censor content that contradicts the perceived scientific consensus on climate change. This call for content moderation has sparked controversy, with skeptics arguing for the importance of open discourse and diverse perspectives.
