    Sen. Rick Scott said his bill to end “swatting” follows an incident last month where police showed up to his home after someone called 911 claiming a shooting had occurred.

    In recent months, congressional security officials have been grappling with a concerning surge in swatting incidents targeting House members. These incidents involve hoax calls to law enforcement, misleading them into believing there is an emergency or violent crime at a lawmaker’s residence. The resulting deployment of armed police officers, often tactical units, wastes valuable police time and resources. This alarming trend has prompted House Sergeant at Arms William McFarland to take proactive measures and address the issue head-on.

    In a letter dated January 30, McFarland informed the spouses of Congress members about the “increased number” of swatting incidents affecting lawmakers and their family residences. Swatting is not only disruptive but also diverts police resources away from real crimes, prompting an ongoing FBI investigation into the rise of such incidents nationwide.

    The letter detailed instances where hoax callers impersonated members of the House or provided lawmakers’ home addresses to law enforcement officials. McFarland offered specific instructions to lawmakers on how to handle swatting incidents, emphasizing the importance of contacting the Sergeant at Arms Police Services Division to implement a plan. He urged members to report any suspicious activity or swatting incidents promptly to Capitol Police.

    McFarland also revealed plans for a virtual conference to discuss swatting with congressional staff and assured personal involvement in upcoming retreats to discuss security matters with spouses. He expressed a commitment to developing initiatives akin to the spouse security handbook issued the previous year, emphasizing that the safety of lawmakers and their families remains a top priority.

    The letter, Axios reported, was not only directed to spouses but also disseminated to congressional offices. This move underscores the severity of the issue and the need for a collective effort to combat swatting.

    The urgency of the matter became more apparent with recent incidents involving prominent lawmakers. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) disclosed that he and his family were victims of a swatting incident over the weekend, resulting in a police response to a false 911 call. Emmer condemned the misuse of police resources in a post on social media and expressed gratitude to the Wright County Sheriff’s Office for their professionalism.

    Democratic Representative Shontel Brown (D-Ohio) also fell victim to swatting, with local police responding to her home while she was away in Washington. Brown expressed her concern, stating, “It is truly alarming that someone would attempt to harass or intimidate me in this way, while also forcing law enforcement to devote resources unnecessarily.”

    Other lawmakers who have recently experienced swatting attacks include Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Brandon Williams (R-N.Y.), as well as Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.). In response, Senator Scott introduced the “Preserving Safe Communities by Ending Swatting Act,” proposing penalties of up to 20 years in prison for swatting incidents resulting in harm.

    Presidential candidate Nikki Haley also revealed her South Carolina home was targeted in a hoax call, emphasizing the chaos surrounding the country. She shared the unsettling experience of law enforcement officials with guns drawn at her parents’ home during the incident.

    Fortunately, none of the reported swatting incidents resulted in injuries, but the potential for harm and the strain on law enforcement resources remain significant concerns. Congressional efforts to address this issue include not only reactive measures but also proactive initiatives to educate and equip lawmakers and their families with the tools to navigate these potentially dangerous situations.

    As the investigation continues, the collective response from congressional security officials underscores the gravity of swatting incidents and the need for comprehensive measures to protect elected officials and their families from this growing threat. Now that Democrats are also being swatted, it seems there will be some action taken.
