Israeli tanks were spotted on Tuesday in the center of Rafah, marking their first appearance in this area following weeks of conflict. This development occurs in a city in southern Gaza, which has become a refuge for over a million displaced individuals due to the ongoing war.
Witnesses reported seeing tanks and armored vehicles equipped with machine guns near the Al-Awda mosque, a prominent landmark in Rafah. This development came in the wake of a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding a recent airstrike on a camp for displaced individuals in Rafah, which he described as a “tragic mistake.” Local health officials reported that the airstrike resulted in at least 45 fatalities.

Despite international condemnation, military activities, including tank fire and airstrikes, continued in Rafah. The Israeli military acknowledged ongoing operations in the area but did not directly address the reports of tanks in the city’s center.
Prior to these ground operations, approximately 1.5 million people were sheltering in Rafah. Since the initiation of these operations, about one million individuals have fled. The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) highlighted the growing difficulty in providing assistance and protection, deeming it “nearly impossible.”

The military escalation follows Israel’s control over the vital border crossing between Rafah and Egypt, with Israeli tanks recently advancing westward. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) cited intelligence about potential terror targets in the area as the reason for their operations and stressed their efforts to minimize civilian casualties.
This military response has continued despite significant international pressure and criticism regarding the methods employed by Israel in its conflict with Hamas. U.S. President Joe Biden hinted at a possible cessation of certain weapons supplies to Israel contingent on their actions in Rafah, and the International Court of Justice demanded a halt to the Israeli offensive in the city.
Netanyahu has remained firm in his commitment to continue operations in Rafah, which he views as a key Hamas stronghold. His resolve appears unshaken even by the International Criminal Court’s efforts to issue a warrant for his arrest related to alleged war crimes committed during the nearly eight-month-long conflict.
BREAKING:
The IDF intercepted a call between two Gazans which suggests that secondary explosions from a Hamas ammunition warehouse near the civilian compound and over 100 meters away from the strike site may have caused yesterday’s fire in Rafah.

The Prime Minister reiterated his intentions to persist with the military campaign, despite the global backlash to the recent deadly incident at the displaced persons camp in Rafah. U.N. Secretary General António Guterres expressed condemnation of the actions resulting in significant civilian casualties, emphasizing the absence of safe places in Gaza and calling for an end to the “horror.”
In a speech to the Israeli parliament, Netanyahu emphasized the necessity of taking precautions to prevent civilian casualties and announced that the recent camp attack would be investigated. However, he reaffirmed his determination to achieve all military objectives, stating his unwillingness to end the war prematurely.
Israel said…
The IDF has released more information from its investigation into the strike in Rafah that eliminated two senior Hamas terrorists this weekend. The IDF did not strike within the humanitarian zone. Hamas continues to lie about it. The strike targeted a Hamas compound more than a kilometer (more than half a mile) from the humanitarian zone. The IDF took several steps to ensure no women or children were in the Hamas compound before carrying out the strike. The IDF also identified rocket launch pits in the vicinity of the strike. Israeli fighter jets used two small munitions, each with a 17 kg (37 lb) warhead, in an attempt to prevent any civilian casualties. The IDF suspects that due to the precision strike, ammunition, weapons, or some other combustible substance it was unaware was stored there caused a secondary explosion, leading to a fire that spread in an area housing displaced Gazans and killing several civilians.
